The 2020s began with a pandemic growl so we are only now just beginning to “roar.” We’ve reached back into previous centuries and found some choral gems that resounded in their respective 20’s. Beginning with Palestrina in 1520 we bring the sounds of such luminaries as Purcell, Pergolesi, Mendelssohn and Beethoven, right into George Gershwin and Cole Porter. Join us for a journey through the thriving 20s in lyrics and song.

The first half celebrates the joy of singing with compositions by Haydn, Parker, Rust, Walker and Memley. The second half will be the Brahms German Requiem.

The title of this concert should really be “The Glorias of the Holidays,” because we will present a gathering of “Glorias” from many different composers: Bach, Vivaldi, Argento, Bass, Freed and Beethoven. But “The Glory of the Holidays” makes a better title. Our second half will include a collection of more contemporary holiday favorites, including Christmas spirituals arranged by Stacey Gibbs. We can promise you it will be a “glorias” concert.

From the “Yellow Submarine” to the “Brown Eyed Girl” there are a million songs that have colors in their title.  We can’t sing them all, but along with our children’s choir we will sing a kaleidoscope of songs that will paint the evening just right.  The featured work is “Mass in Blue,” by English composer Will Todd – not just a collaboration, but a coloration of the traditional liturgical words with the hues of contemporary jazz.

“The Creation,” considered by many to be the greatest masterpiece by Franz Joseph Haydn, is a musical illustration of the Biblical account of the beginning of life.  We will perform the favorite choruses and solos from this splendid work. John Rutter’s “Requiem” has become one of the most popular settings of this text that honors the passing of life. Performed together with orchestra they offer a musical experience that celebrates the full circle of life.

It is the music that unites our spirits at the holiday season. With selections from Handel’s glorious “Judas Maccabeus,” the Master Chorale honors Hanukkah; with Mac Wilberg’s majestic “Tres Cantus Laudendi” with brass and percussion, the chorale proclaims the season; with a flurry of carols, both secular and sacred, the chorale celebrates Christmas. The Master Chorale will bring the spirit of the holidays to full sound with “Christmas at the Movies,” “A Pentatonix Christmas Medley,” an audience carol sing, and heart-warming arrangements by the renowned Shawn Kirschner.
